NATE

What will set you apart from the rest? NATE.

NATE stands for “North American Technician Excellence”. This organization offers a special certification for HVACR technicians. Knowledgeable and professional, the NATE certified technician is at the top of their game. By becoming NATE certified you have the distinction of being a recognized as being the best the industry has to offer. Only NATE certified technicians can wear a NATE patch or note it on their Resume.

The NATE certification exam is not 1 test but 21 separate tests. Depending on your area of expertise you will have to choose which tests to complete. The Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise (KATES) are divided into tests for installation, service and senior technicians. To become NATE certified you must pass 2 exams under the Service or Installation section:

1. Core: The general knowledge of HVACR principles and practices
2. Specialty Exam:  A specific area of specialization such as Air Conditioning, Light Commercial Refrigeration or Hydronics Gas

NATE supplies detailed information for the certification test. You can find a list of the topics covered in each of the Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise sections here.

Coyne College is an electronic testing facility for the NATE exam. The benefit of electronic testing is that you’ll receive your results immediately following the exam. Simply visit the Student Account’s department to fill out an application and make your payment.

Once you have completed an application and paid the testing fee you may contact Coyne College’s Resource Center to schedule your 4 hour online testing session. We recommend registering for a maximum of 1 Core and only 1 Specialty exam within one 4 hour testing session. Once you become certified in 1 specialty area you can always return to add additional certifications.
